2016 KCSE: Only 141 candidates scored straight A’s

By HILARY KIMUYU December 29th, 2016 1 min read

The number of top performers in the 2016 KCSE examination dropped significantly with only 141 candidates scoring straight A’s.

Further, only 4,645 candidates got A – (minus), 10,975 got B+ (plus) while 73,168 candidates got B plain an C+ (plus).

In total, only 88,929 candidates scored between A and C+, 15.4 per cent, out of 577,079 candidates who sat for the examinations.

The grim outcome was announced on Thursday by Education Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang’I at Shimo la Tewa High School in Mombasa  while releasing the 2016 KCSE results.

He said the significant drop in performance is a true reflection of candidates’ result, without manipulation and massaging of the results.

NO IRREGULARITIES

The Education Secretary added that there were no irregularities in 2016 KCSE results and that all candidates who sat for their exams will get their results.

Dr Matiang’i  pointed out that some schools that produced more than 200 A’s last year could not produce 10 this year.

He congratulated Alliance Girls High School and Kenya High for their exemplary performance.  The former had 25 straight A’s, while the latter managed 21 straight A’s.

Of the top 20 students, 16 were girls while only four were boys.

He said the ministry will support the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) in dealing with errant teachers who were involved in irregularities during the examination.

About 74000 professionals were employed to assist in marking exams.

President Kenyatta has also directed the Kenya National Examination Council (Knec) to abolish the use of index numbers and instead to use unique registration identifier at all levels beginning in 2017.
