Kenya to mark inaugural Elder Abuse Awareness Day
Ambassador Raychelle Omamo, Acting Cabinet Secretary Ministry of Labour, Social Security and Services will on Monday 15th June, 2015 join Older Persons during celebrations to mark the inaugural World Elder Abuse Awareness Day in Kenya.
The day, which was designated by the UN General Assembly in December 2011 and observed annually every June 15 by UN member countries, is observed to recognize and address the problem of elderly abuse in society.
Noteworthy, mistreatment and disrespect towards elders within families and in the society has been on the rise, not only in Kenya but also globally.
AGEING POPULATION
The day thus provides a suitable platform for Government, media, the private sector, academia, and all relevant stakeholders to understand the challenges and opportunities presented by an ageing population.
Activities to mark the day will begin with a procession from Vigilance House at 8.00am which will be flagged off by Ms. Lydia Muriuki, Secretary Social Development in the Ministry.
The procession will move from Vigilance House, Harambee Avenue, Kencom Bus Station, Moi Avenue, KICC then to City Hall Way.
Presentations on Elder Abuse and speeches will thereafter take place at Lenana Hall, Kenyatta International Convention Centre at 10.00am where CS Omamo will deliver a key-note address.
