45 people arrested for smoking shisha in Nyali
Police in Mombasa County are currently detaining 45 people who were nabbed smoking Shisha in different joints in Nyali.
The 45 were nabbed by police officers and officials from the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) conducted on the night of Saturday, January 13, 2023.
The officers said that the tens of the suspects were arrested in various hide out and escape joints.
Mr Anthony Amerikwa who is the NACADA Chief Executive Officer (CEO) told Nairobi News that they managed to confiscate 50 shisha pots and over ten cartons that contained special shisha flavors.
“We shall intensify similar raids in the country to free many Kenyans from abusing the illegal drug,” he said.
It is worth noting that Shisha smoking is outlawed in the country since 2017 after the country banned the use, import, manufacture and promotion of the tobacco product.
Since December 2023, police officers have been working alongside NACADA officials in raiding joints known to encourage and sell shisha.
On January 6, 2023, several media personalities were attacked and injured in an assault during a similar raid carried out by NACADA in Nairobi.
The drama took place at a local bar located in Kilimani Sub-County in Nairobi. In the process some of the media personalities lost their equipment.
Three police officers and a driver with Nacada were also injured in the chaos. Police said 21 suspects were arrested at the joint.
Police who had accompanied them could not do much as the situation turned chaotic.
They however managed to arrest some of the attackers and revelers.
Drama broke out when police officers, accompanied by journalists and NACADA officials, arrived at the bar linked to a politician at around 11 pm to arrest club managers and patrons for allegedly smoking shisha, which is banned.
