Nairobi estates flooded by sudden rains

Parts of Nairobi were on Thursday night flooded following a heavy downpour.

Langata and South C estates were the most affected areas as photos of flooded houses and roads were shared on social media.

In South C, residents blamed run off from the newly constructed Southern by-pass as well as poor drainage system.

Earlier in the week, the Kenya Meteorological Department gave a forecast of the onset of long rains following three months of high temperatures in the country.

An account opened to inform residents at @southcward tweeted, “Homes & property destroyed by storm water from SouthernByPass in Highway&Real Estates, South C.”

POOR DRAINAGE

Others proposed swamp reclamation with user @ElayneOkaya tweeting, “@EvaShilaho I don’t live in South C, just empathizing with the plight of its’ residents. Swamp reclamation is possible btw. @NairobiCountyGo.”

In Langata estate, photos of a flooded residential apartment were shared on social media with residents blaming poor drainage system.

This even as the Nairobi County government set aside millions of shillings for the much anticipated El Nino rains which ended up as normal short rains in October-December last year.

Unclogging of the drainage which is supposed to be done before the start of every rainy season was not done in most parts of the city.
