6 locations to avoid during the holiday festivities

By Winnie Mabel December 23rd, 2023 2 min read

Millions of people across the world are looking forward to celebrating Christmas. This is a time for family and friend gatherings, spending time bonding over elaborate meals, touring, and traveling.

The festive season has people giddy with joy, the anticipation of partying and networking as well as just cutting loose and having fun.

For many people, if they are not planning on hosting or attending private family and friend parties, they plan on heading out to various social amenities to take in the sights and scenes, as well as pinch a little bit of the festive mood for themselves in celebration.

While some places may be great to visit, you might want to avoid some locations if you want your Christmas spirit to remain intact past December 25 and well into the New Year.

Check out some of these locations below:

  1. Your ex partner’s home. There is a reason this person is an ex so you have no business accepting invitations to go and spend Christmas at their homes or at parties they are hosting somewhere. You may end up leaving the party with more regrets than you had while breaking up with them in the past.
  2. Your in-laws’ homes/parties. Especially if they are the toxic kind and like to cover this up with the ‘in-laws’ inquisitions’. You will only leave their parties with hurt feelings, regret over being part of their family, and reflecting on your luck of a spine to stand up to them because culture says you cannot. Avoid them.
  3. Avoid malls. Everyone will go to the mall, especially if they are located within estates. It will be crowded, noisy and dirty. People will come from all over the town/city to these malls and any services offered at the mall will be minimal and rushed at best. You don’t need that on Christmas day especially.
  4. Avoid small restaurants, supermarket cafes and fast food joints. These places will be crowded too, the staff will be rushed and feel harassed by the customers and any food they serve will either be subpar or uncooked in places. You are better off cooking that food at home and enjoying it in peace with whomever you want- and it will be cheaper, too!
  5. Avoid clubs located among major roads such as those along Langata and Mombasa Roads in Nairobi . You don’t want to drink and find yourself standing by the curb waiting for a cab, and another drunk driver rams into you. Along these major roads, there are a large number of drunk drivers so even if you do not drink much, your life may be at risk from other people who do not know how to control their alcohol. Go to clubs within your neighborhood where your mode of transportation will basically entail you staggering next door to your house.
  6. Like malls, avoid public parks and pools. Everyone will flock there and there will be no space for you to enjoy yourself. You only have to note how Kenyatta Beach, alias Pirates, is overcrowded annually on Christmas Day to know to stay home or find other locations where you pay for food, ambience and the pool.
