In fact, there are instances where actors have actively campaigned for the demise of their on-screen personas, sometimes for months or even years.

Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder (Stefan and Damon) – The Vampire Diaries
As The Vampire Diaries neared its conclusion, both Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder, who portrayed the lead characters Stefan and Damon, lobbied for their characters’ demise.
