8 Ways to get over that bad Christmas hangover

Christmas has come and gone, but we are still in the middle of the festive season. For many, there is still plenty of food to eat and drink to enjoy.

But there are bound to be dire consequences after all the eating and drinking is over, especially if to over do it.

So here are eight simple ways of shaking off your Christmas hangover.

1. Choose your poison

The type of drink you choose can make a huge difference in how you feel the next morning. Some alcohols have a lot more toxic byproducts from fermentation than others. They are, in order from best to worst: Vodka, gin, tequila, whiskey, other distilled spirits, dry cider, dry champagne, dry white wine, white wines, red wines, dessert wines, beer. Tragically, beer has the most toxins of any common alcoholic beverage.

2. Hydrate

Before you can eliminate toxins, your body dilutes them with water so they don’t harm you on the way out.  The water either comes from your tissues or water you drink – so drink water. It is good to drink a glass of water for every serving of alcohol you consume ideally at the same time or right after.

3. Take vitamin C

Before each drink, take one vitamin C capsule. This will help block the conversion of alcohol into aldehyde, the most hangover-causing metabolite that also causes very fast aging, wrinkles, etc.

4. Give yourself a caffeine kick

No matter how much of a challenge leaving your warm and toasty bed may seem, rising to your normal morning routine will help kick that hangover early on. The caffeine in coffee works to narrow the swollen blood vessels in your head, elevating your pain. If you’re a regular coffee drinker, skipping your morning dosage could actually be detrimental to your hangover-curing cause.

5. Go back to bed

As brutal as it is to hear – especially when your head is pounding with the force of a dozen hammers – the most fool-proof hangover cure is simple, time. And perhaps the best way to dwindle these hours is to spend them unconscious.

6. Whatever you do, don’t drink more

It may offset the hangover for now, but in the end, it will come roaring back, this time with more dehydration to deal with.

7. Pump up the potassium

Everyone knows that bananas are a great source of potassium, and there’s a wealth of body benefits that come along with consuming this element. One you might not know, is that potassium is great in aiding a hangover. Try a banana or avocado to help.

8. Prepare in advance

It’s not much help now that you’re already crippled with hangover symptoms, but the next time you’re ready to throw yourself back in the ring, consider washing your drink of choice down with a greasy meal or a spoonful of honey to prepare your stomach for the hell you’re about it to put it through.
