Rufftone: Why I stepped down for Margaret Wanjiru in Nairobi Senator race
Kenyan singer Rufftone says he was asked to postpone his ambition of vying for the Nairobi Senator in the August 2022 polls.
But Rufftone, born Roy Mwita, has told Nairobi News nothing or no one will stop him from contesting for the same seat in the 2027 polls.
Rufftone was keen on contesting on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket but had to step down for Bishop Margaret Wanjiru.
“I was asked by our party leader President-elect Ruto to step down,” the Mungu Baba hitmaker says.
“But it will be a different story in 2027. I am ready to face off with Edwin Sifuna should he decide to vie again.”
Sifuna, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) secretary general won the seat, garnering 716,615 votes, with Wanjiru, his closest competitor scooping 524,091 votes.
Rufftone adds he joined politics so as to fight for the rights of artists.
“I realized need artists to be involved in the decision-making positions as is the case in many other countries. I have observed there is a law in other places that compels media houses to have 80-90% of the content be produced locally. That has to be the case here as well.”
“If you listen to (the South African hit) Jerusalema, you realize it is very popular mainly because the government over there promotes artists. The same should happen in our country.”
