AFC Leopards over the moon as Ababu Namwamba’s reign begins

By Cecil Odongo October 28th, 2022 2 min read

AFC Leopards on Thursday congratulated new Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba after being sworn in to take over from Amina Mohamed.

Namwamba is a former Ingwe official, having served as Assistant Secretary General of the 12-time Football Kenya Federation Premier League champions. He returns to the Sports docket, where he served between 2012-2013 in the coalition government.

“AFC Leopards NEC and its entire fraternity congratulates Hon Ababu Namwamba on his appointment as the Cabinet Secretary Youth Affairs Sports and the Arts,” said a statement signed by Club Chairman Dan Shikanda.

“We are confident that under his exceptional leadership, knowledge and guidance, the youth and art sectors, as well as sportsmen and women of all ages, will strive for even greaters heights and achievement. This appointment is well deserved,” added the statement.

During his vetting, Namwamba promised to help community clubs like Leopards and Gor Mahia seal big sponsorship so they can get out of the current financial constraints they are facing.

“I have also been an official of one of the clubs you mentioned. We must connect the growth of grassroots football with community clubs. Those with a high pedigree, like Gor and AFC, should be strengthened through sponsorship.

Sadly, a partner like Supersport left, yet it played a big role in marketing our players,” said Namwamba while answering Kwanza MP Ferdinand Wanyonyi.

The new CS is expected to help unlock Kenya’s current stalemate with FIFA after the previous government disbanded FKF in November last year. That led to the county being suspended from FIFA back in February.
