Akothee’s reasons for struggling with university education for 10 years

In Kenya, the expected time a higher education student is expected to complete a diploma course is two years and a degree course in four years.

However, financial constraints can make some students defer their courses for many more years as they work to earn some money for their fees if they don’t come from well-to-do families.

Kenyan singer Esther Akoth, popularly known as Akothee, is one among millions of students who had to defer their studies past the expected course duration.

However, in Akothee’s case, financial incapability was not the reason that she had to stay out of school for 11 years.

While in the company of her Caucasian boyfriend whom she nicknamed Omosh, Akothee revealed her reasons when she explained herself to the director of the university in which she is enrolled. And he was not a pleased man upon hearing her reasons.

“I want to be honest with you. Before – I’m a single mother of five – I had too many responsibilities as a mother and stepping in to the feet of a father. So I thought I had to educate my children first. So I was doing it concurrently and I travelled quite a lot outside of the country. So most of the time the exams would come, pass me, I’d find my student portal is not opening and then I was just caught up in the midst of so much. With this, I’ve been a student since 2013,” said Akothee amid laughter.

To this director responded: “That is so wrong. That is very, very wrong. In fact that is very wrong.”

Akothee calmed down and promised to resume her studies vowing that she will graduate this time around.

Today, Akothee’s three daughters – Vesha, Rue and Fancy Makadia – are university graduates while her two sons are still in primary school. Fancy Makadia graduated in February 2023 at a university in France. She obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Tourism and Hotel Management.

“She finalized her Form 6 in Braeburn and I took her to France. I was afraid she is too fragile to survive in Kenya. I admitted her to a language school in France for a year before she joined University where she graduated with Bachelor’s degree in Tourism & Hotel management. She already secured a job and doing her masters now. My daughter has made me so proud that I couldn’t keep this story. The journey of mastering your life,” Akothee celebrated her youngest daughter.

Rue Baby, a model, graduated in December 2021, from Strathmore University, while Vesha graduated in 2020 with a Bachelor of Commerce Degree from Strathmore University too.
