Alcoblow back to tame Nairobi’s drunk driving

The Transport ministry has re-introduced breathalysers to curb the escalating road accidents in the country, some of which have been attributed to drunk driving.

Cabinet Secretary Michael Kamau said the high-tech gadgets, commonly known as the ‘Alcoblow’, will be used to check alcohol levels of drivers.

Addressing journalists in his office on Monday, he said: “We have acquired four. Before the end of the month, we will have 10 more. We are out to eradicate the culture of drunk driving.”

He said hygienic concerns that were raised in the past have been addressed as the officers who will carry out the tests on motorists will use disposable mouthpieces when checking the level of alcohol in the breath.

The minister added that the police, who will use the gadgets, will be mobile, starting with Nairobi and other major urban centres.

The minister cautioned officers against using the gadget to extort money from Kenyans, saying, police bosses across the country will check on the use of the equipment since it keeps records.
