Water Cabinet Secretary nominee Alice Wahome has shared her experience of growing up in a family of 48.

In her submissions during her vetting in Parliament, Ms Wahome explained: “My father was a polygamous man. We are 48 siblings in my home. Something I don’t wish many men to do especially with the current economic times.”

She adds that her mother motivated her to work hard as both had to spend time tiling the land so as to make ends meet. The politician describes herself as a daughter of a peasant farmer.

Ms Wahome praised her father for educating all his children with proceeds from the nine-acre coffee farm.

Born in Muruka village and attending school near her home, Ms Wahome worked hard to excel in her O levels before joining the University of Nairobi for her undergraduate.

Ms Wahome stressed she grew up like any other village child taking up chores that required to. She currently has a net worth of Sh218 million.

The Kandara lawmaker says her assets include family properties she co-owns with her husband, and her current salary as an MP.

On whether she could manage her temper, Ms Wahome was asked, “Case in point is October 27, 2018 where you were captured roughing up an IEBC official. From where you sit, how would you take this act considering the Constitution provides that authority assigned to a state officer mentions respect for the people…and honour and dignity to the office?”

To which she responded with, “We had a tussle (with the IEBC official). The background of that was votes given wrongly. We had a returning officer who did not want to answer. I’m sure we both regret it. It could have been handled better.”

However, she also noted that no charges were levelled against her.
