Ambulance patient dies, doctors reversed decision to switch off machine

An accident survivor who spent 18 hours in an ambulance passed away on Friday after his heart stopped beating at 1:50 p.m.

He was still in the life support machine at the time of his death.

Mr Alex Madaga, 37, had gone into a coma on Thursday and doctors at Kenyatta National Hospital had counselled family to accept his possible death.

However, the doctors on Friday rescinded an earlier decision to allow family members switch off life support machines and let the patient to die.

Mr Madaga was knocked down by a speeding car on Waiyaki Way on Monday at about 9pm and taken to Kikuyu Mission Hospital where doctors referred him to Kenyatta for specialised treatment.

He spent 18 hours in an ambulance because KNH officials claimed they did not to have an ICU bed.
