Six robbers shot dead in fight on crime
By STELLA CHERONOAt least six robbers have been shot dead in Nairobi in separate incidents during the weekend.
Five of the robbers were shot dead at the Express Kenya Limited in Industrial Area, while the sixth was shot dead in Ngara and a toy pistol recovered.
In the two separate incidents, no suspect was arrested.
Police have defended the shootings, saying the robbers refused to surrender.
At Express Kenya Limited in Industrial Area, about eight men armed with metal bars forced their way into the premises at around 1am on Sunday where they attacked watchmen before tying them with wires.
They then loaded motorcycle tyres into a lorry but were confronted by the police as they were driving out of the compound.
According to Nairobi county commander Benson Kibui, the value of the tyres is yet to be established.
Five of them were shot dead while two escaped.
The sixth suspect was shot in Ngara on Saturday night while robbing the public.
Mr Kibu said that the suspect was in company of three other armed men near the Fig Tree hotel where they were robbing members of the public.
Police officers on patrol were notified and rushed to the scene. One was fatally shot while the three others escaped.
The National Police Service Act was amended to allow police to use force in defence of property, and not life alone.
