Alaaaar! How Gen Z are sneaking alcohol into clubs

How to sneak in a drink to the club

It would appear that the sherehe sheria mantra is turning a section of Kenyans into habitual drinkers.

The new slogan in Nairobi is ‘Vibes and Inshallah!’.

Partying is the law and it can be a celebration of anything.

Did you buy new shoes? Drink.

Did you leave work earlier than usual? Drink.

You received a surprise M-Pesa message? Drink.

Well, Gen Z call it shots but you get what I mean, right?

Well, this drinking habit is now turning team sherehe sheria into little manipulative salamanders who are now looking for ways to YOLO cheaply!

Imagine that!

You can, therefore, imagine our surprise when we came across a video on TikTok of an Ethiopian girl living in Kenya showing off how she sneaks in drinks and we were left aghast!

In the video uploaded to TikTok by Tesfaye on November 7, 2022, she could be seen pouring Beefeater London Pink Strawberry flavoured alcohol into a transparent 500ml plastic bag and then closing up the open end of the bag in a knot.

She then proceeded to tuck the alcohol into her bra and patted it back to make it look like it was part of her chest.

Lately, drinking has been made attractive as breweries partner with influencers and celebrities to advertise drinking as a cool social habit.

Several Kenyan influencers are known to partner with such companies and are always looking for ways to create content to show how drinking is a fun pastime when done with friends, drunk over brunches and picnics, drunk as part of card games and so forth.

In the January 2022 Quarterly publication, the National Authority for the Campaign Against Drug Abuse found that such advertisements and sponsorships were contributing to the increase in the number of youth drinking alcohol.
