Khalwale, a veteran politician in Western Kenya, reclaimed the senatorial in the August 9, 2022 polls on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket.

Known as the bull-fighter in local political circles, Khalwale had initially announced he will vie for the gubernatorial seat only to step down in support of Cleophas Malala following a political settlement involving President-elect William Ruto and Amani National Congress (ANC) leader Musalia Mudavadi.

An eloquent speaker known to appeal to the masses, Khalwale campaigned for Malala even though the duo appeared to clash at a rally when the Senator asked the crowd to choose between Malala and Fernandes Barasa.

Malala was unhappy with the remark which indicated Khalwale had failed to endorse him.
