Bunge la Mwananchi president Francis Awino has warned young women not to allow their desperation for a better life to lead them into death traps.

Speaking to Nairobi News, Awino said the quest for a better life and quick money has landed many young people both women and men, into death traps.

“I would like to warn young women not to allow their desperation for a better life to lead them into death traps,” Awino told Nairobi News.

On the other hand, he notes that the current situation of economic hardship, poverty, and lack of employment, makes young women vulnerable targets of criminals.

“The gruesome murders targeting young women is a worrying trend that must be condemned by all Kenyans and the authorities must quickly act to avert the situation. In our current situation of economic hardship, poverty, and lack of employment, young women who have no source of income are increasingly becoming vulnerable targets of criminals.”

In the last two weeks, 5 young women have succumbed to gruesome and horrifying deaths.

In some instances, the deceased’s bodies were dismembered into pieces.

There has been a rising trend of women being found gruesomely murdered in Nairobi’s rental houses.

These include the shocking and horrific killing of popular socialite Starlet Wahu.

She was found date moments after CCTV footage saw her enter a lodging with a man.

Police are holding one John Matara in relation to the murder.

In another shocking incident, Rita Waeni, a student at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) was also found murdered in an apartment in Nairobi, a day after he set out to meet someone on a date.

Her body was also dismembered and the head is missing to date.

Latest homicide statistics from Femicide Count Kenya recorded say 152 killings were committed last year, the highest in the past five years.

The numbers could be higher given that some cases are never reported. These shocking statistics should shame us all and spur us on to demand action.
