Bunge la Mwananchi readies for December 7 elections
By Winnie OnyandoBunge la Mwananchi, the grassroots movement that has been a key player in Kenyan civil society, is set to conduct its elections on December 7, 2023.
In an exclusive interview with Nairobi News, Robert Kiberenge, the chairman of the Bunge la Mwananchi election committee, expressed confidence in the organisation’s preparedness for the upcoming event.
“Absolutely, the elections are proceeding as planned, and we have executed thorough preparations. Today, we are in the process of procuring election materials, which include ballot papers, boxes, reflector jackets, and security measures,” said Kiberenge in the interview.
He further assured that stringent security measures would be in place on the day of the election to ensure a smooth and undisrupted voting process.
“Security will be tightened here tomorrow. No disruptions will be tolerated during the voting process,” he added firmly.
The Bunge la Mwananchi elections, held every two years, have become a crucial platform for the social movement to elect leaders who will champion their cause.

In November, the electoral body cleared Isaac Otieno, Francis Awino, Kiira Mishael, Patrick Kamotho, and Rajab Were to vie for various positions within the movement.
It’s noteworthy that this year’s election was pushed to December 7, 2023, due to anti-government protests.
The movement, founded in the early 1990s during a one-party state, has evolved to play a vital role in keeping the ruling government in check.
Originally established with a longer presidential term, Bunge la Mwananchi now holds elections every two years at its headquarters in Jeevanjee.
Active members from 26 counties send delegates to participate in the election process, casting votes for positions such as president, vice president, speaker, and women’s representative.
Outgoing president Calvince ‘Gaucho’ Okoth, who has been at the forefront of anti-government protests over the high cost of living, has indicated that he will not seek re-election.
As the movement gears up for these pivotal elections, the stage is set for a new chapter in Bunge la Mwananchi’s ongoing commitment to advocating for the rights and welfare of ordinary citizens.
