The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) on Thursday evening announced that the runway lights at the Wilson Airport in Nairobi went out of service.

In a statement released, KAA said the outage was caused by an unprecedented technical hitch.

The authority however noted that efforts were already underway to remedy the situation, further appoligizing to travellers for the inconvenience caused as a result of the outage.

“We would like to inform the public that the runway lights at Wilson Airport are currently out of service due to a technical fault. Our team is in the process of identifying the root cause,” KAA said.

“As a precautionary measure, a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) has been issued. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause to our valued passengers and stakeholders.”

In December 2023, KAA was at pains to explain why the country’s biggest airport was unable to automatically switch to a back-up power supply as the country was plunged into darkness on Sunday evening when several parts of the country experienced a power outage.

This was despite KAA saying that only terminals 1A and 1E at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) were affected by the blackout. “No runway lights were affected during take-offs and landings,” KAA said.

The country had experienced a number of nationwide blackouts, including one on August 26 that lasted for more than 20 hours, with supply in some regions going on and off.
