The driver of the Ongata Line Sacco matatu that killed four people on Lang’ata road was on Monday charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

Francis Mukuria denied a totla of ten counts before Kibera principal magistrate Barbara Ojoo.

He is accused of driving the vehicle without a driving licence and an alternative of failing to carry a driving licence.

Other counts include causing injuries to passengers who were aboard the matatu by dangerous driving, driving an unroadworthy vehicle and failing to report an accident at a police station.

Prosecution opposed bond arguing that the accused is a flight risk because he had disappeared from the scene of the accident and only to resurfaced eight days later.

The case, according to the prosecution, sparked public ire and the accused should be denied bail for his own  security.

Prosecution also argued that victims of the accident are still in hospital and the charges could be amended in future.

Mr Mukuria surrendered himself to the police on Sunday.
