Ex-football boss Sam Nyamweya mourns “reliable” June Moi
By Winnie OnyandoFormer Football Kenya Federation (FKF) president Sam Nyamweya has condoled with retired president Daniel Moi’s family following the passing on of June Moi.
The deceased was the retired president’s adopted daughter.
In his condolences note, Nyamweya, a renowned businessman with political connections, described Ms Moi as a trustworthy and reliable person.
“During the (Kenya Africa National Union) KANU era, I worked closely with June who was a trustworthy and reliable person. I have lost a friend and a colleague,” mourned Nyamweya.
KANU was the ruling political party during the Moi regime.
“To the Moi family, I say pole for the loss and may the almighty God guide and comfort you at this time of deep sorrow and mourning.”
Nyamweya’s debut on the political scene with the Youth for Kanu (YK) 92 outfit, a group formed with former president Moi’s blessings to help canvass support for the government ahead of the 1992 multi-party elections.
Nyamweya was appointed treasurer of the outfit with prominent businessman Cyrus Jirongo as chairman and President William Ruto as a mobiliser.
June, Moi’s youngest daughter, died on April 11 at the age of 60.
The Moi family confirmed the sad news and asked for privacy during the mourning period.
“We are deeply saddened to announce the passing on of our beloved, June Chebet Moi this morning. At this time of grief, we request for your prayers and privacy as we the family come to terms with the tragic loss of our sister. May her soul rest in eternal peace,” a family spokesman said in a message.
Moi, who retired in 2002 having ruled the country for 24 years, was Kenya’s second president. He took over following Jomo Kenyatta’s death in 1978.
Moi and his wife Lena in were blessed with eight children – five sons and three daughters- some of them adopted.
They include Jenniffer Chemutai Kositany who was the first born, rally driver and enthusiast, Jonathan Toroitich who passed on in April 2019 after a long battle with cancer.
Third-born John Mark lived briefly in the US and is the least known of Moi’s sons.
Former Rongai MP, Raymond Moi who was born in 1960 is the family’s thirdborn followed by twins Philip and Doris who were born in 1962.
Philip is a retired army major and among the pioneer indigenous Kenyans to take up polo as a sport.
June, who is the youngest, followed by Gideon, a renowned politician formerly Baringo Senator and reported heir of the family’s multi-billion estate.
A successful businesswoman, June attended Nairobi Primary, Kenya High School and then moved on to further her studies overseas.
