Former State House spokesperson Kanze Dena Mararo and her family are in mourning.

On Sunday, February 26, 2023, the former prime time news anchor posted a tribute to her deceased relative, the late Sophie Kadzo Price. The late Kadzo Price was born in 1936 and died on February 16, 2023, at the age of 87.

“Special dedication to you. #RIP Mama Mkubwa #Faretheewell,” said Kanze Dena as she accompanied the tribute with Msanii Music Group’s Nitaingia Lango song.

Kanze Dena added, “Celebrating a life well lived…Peaceful, orderly and beautiful… a true testimonial of your life. Fare the well.”

The funeral service took place in Frere Town, Mombasa City at the ACK Emmanuel Church Kengeleni and the poll bearers were members of the church’s Mother’s Union.

“Poleni sana,” said singer Emmy Kosgei.

“My deepest condolences, may the Lord comfort you during this trying time,” added Winnie Adoma.

“Poleni. Mola amrehemu. Knew her as a child,” said T. N Mwadzaya.

Kanze Dena’s former colleagues in the media industry also condoled with her.

Her grandmother’s death comes three years after her father, Harry Kitao Stephens, died on March 9, 2018, after battling terminal illness. Efforts to revive him in hospital proved futile as his breathing complications worsened beyond treatment.

“Dad and Mum… Thank you for everything.. . I know you watching over me…. As I watch over my SIBLINGS…I will endeavor to be half the great people you were……shoes toooo big to fill….. You will always be in my heart…ana miss zaid… I love you….. ‘ Naam tuonane mtooni watakatifu kwetu mtoni… Tutakusanyika mtooni kwenye Kiti cha Enzi…. ‘ #RIP#thatseasonagain #itiswell,” said Kanze as she mourned her late father.

Her father had held the family together for Kanze and her sisters for years since the death of his wife over 15 years ago. She too died from a terminal illness- colon cancer- just a year before Kanze Dena joined the Royal Media Services.

“Maa! How did you manage to touch of so many lives, be involved at every function…still have time to bring us up singlehandedly and work…our home was nicknamed ‘Boarding’ there was always space you would say. Stern woman you were and very loving and accommodating.. Always had time to listen…to anyone who wanted an ear…

We miss your singing at weddings (we don’t attend as many anymore) sumptuous meals…(that gene Edda got grade A of it..your laughter…Kadzo got the best of that gene…Selina knows everybody!! ‘Counselor’. You taught us never to look down on anyone because we don’t know tomorrow… A motto we have lived by….we are not there yet but we trying. We miss you loads,” said Kanze Dena in a past message as she marked her mother’s death anniversary.
