In a statement released on Thursday, 28 September, Nyong’o said:

“It is with humility that I accept my appointment as UN Advisor on Local governments, promising that I will do my best to promote the ideals and objectives of the UN as a member of the Advisory Group in advancing the cause of local and regional governments.”

As a UN Advisor on Local Governments, Governor Nyong’o’s responsibilities will include providing counsel to Secretary-General Guterres on matters concerning the engagement and action of local and regional governments.

His contributions will be crucial in guiding UN Member States in making comprehensive decisions, particularly in crisis recovery measures, sustainable development, gender equality, social inclusion, and climate action.

This appointment is not the first international recognition of Governor Nyong’o’s expertise and commitment to public service.

On the national front, Governor Nyong’o has a storied career that includes serving as the Minister for Planning and National Development (2003-2005), Minister for Medical Services (2008-2013), Senator of Kisumu County (2013-2017), and his current role as Governor of Kisumu County.

This announcement comes on the heels of another Kenyan’s appointment to the UN, further cementing Kenya’s presence on the international stage.

In his new role, Namwamba will advocate for the Kenyan youth agenda on a global scale.

Governor Nyong’o’s appointment underscores Kenya’s continued participation in global affairs and the recognition of its leaders on the international stage.

His extensive experience and commitment to public service position him to make valuable contributions to the UN’s efforts to address global challenges and promote sustainable development.
