Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has opened up on how she was not interested in dating let alone getting married again at the time she met her husband Kamotho Waiganjo.

Waiguru who tied the knot in 2019 in a traditional wedding, shared that despite knowing her husband for quite some time, they argued a lot the first time they were tasked to work on a project together.

Though she did not envision herself getting married a second time, Waiguru notes that Mr Waiganjo pursued her till she gave in.

She recalls, “He pursued me, despite being not interested in getting into a relationship at the time, I was in treasury and I had known him. We were both married and in chaplaincy circles. He was in the Christian lawyer Sacco and so was my ex. Then much later when we were writing the constitution, they needed somebody to help in the finance chapter and I was sent to go from treasury and assist the technical team which he was leading.”

Then adds, “So that is when we started arguing because he started telling me what was right and I told him, since he was the expert he could as well write it but then why were they calling me? But we continued arguing because I was telling him you cannot write it like this because these are the fundamental principles of public finance.”

To quell the arguments, Waiguru and Waiganjo took a few bets on some clauses because they had to go through processes. “I won a few then we became friends. I insisted for about a few years that I was not interested in dating, he said neither did he, so we were good friends.”

However, a few of their friends would question the nature of their relationship which Waiguru summed up as, ‘We are just having coffee dates.’

Waiguru who doubles up as the chairperson of the Council of Governors (COG) has transitioned into one of the most popular politicians in Kenya. The second-term governor for Kirinyaga is reportedly being primed for bigger things.

In a previous interview with Sunday Nation, Waiguru revealed that they decided to formalize their close to 12-year relationship for political reasons and has never shied from praising her husband.

Shortly after the Senate committee acquitted her impeachment, Waiguru thanked her husband for the support despite being the lead counsel in her defense.

“I would like to thank my husband who has been amazingly supportive throughout this process. A friend of mine recently said that there are husbands from heaven and then there are husbands who come walking. You are definitely one from heaven,” she said.

Mr Waiganjo is a renowned lawyer and the former commissioner at the Defunct Commission for the Implementation of the Constitution. He also shares his political wisdom nuggets in the Standard.
