Kenyan athlete collapses and dies in Nyahururu
By DAVID MACHARIA, @DavidMacharia1A Japan-based Kenyan athlete who had just arrived in the country collapsed and died in Nyahururu Thursday morning.
Marathoner Johana Maina collapsed as he and colleagues were taking breakfast at a friend’s house in Nyahururu town.
Coach Francis Kamau said Mr Maina he drove himself from Nairobi on arrival from Japan.
“This morning he woke up and joined friends at a colleague’s house where he collapsed while they were taking breakfast,” he said.
ATHLETICS FRATERNITY
The death of the 2012 Sendai Half marathon winner, who is an in-law to Rio Olympics bound Bedan Karoki, sent shock waves to athletics fraternity in Nyahururu.
News of his sudden death caused runners who had gathered at the Nyahururu Stadium for morning training to abruptly terminate the session and rush to the home where he had died.
The runner is among many who launched their running career at the Nyahururu based Mfae Athletics Club.
The deceased’s body is lying at Nyahururu County Referral Hospital mortuary.
