KU student in court for illegal possession of firearms

A third-year Kenyatta University student and his alleged accomplice were Thursday charged in a Thika court with having been found in possession of two pistols and three rounds of ammunition.

The two who were arrested last Saturday and have been in police custody.

They denied the charges and were released on a Sh100,000 bond and a surety of a similar amount.

The student, Eric Macharia, 21, and Kennedy Muchira Muthee a resident of Ruiru town appeared before the Thika Chief Magistrate Antony Kimani Ndungu.

They were charged that on May 9 this year in Ruiru town, they were found with the said weapons as they suspiciously prepared to commit a crime.

In mitigation, Macharia urged for leniency by the court by virtue of being a student.

He also argued that he is the sole bread winner of his family and that his was a case of mistaken identity.

His accomplice pleaded that the court reduces bail for him as he was not in a position to raise the same.

The case was scheduled for hearing on September 9, 2015.
