Maandamano: Alfred Mutua asks envoys to respect Kenya’s sovereignty
By Kevin CheruiyotForeign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Dr Alfred Mutua on Thursday briefed High Commissioners and Ambassadors, Heads of Missions and distinguished guests on the current political situation in Kenya.
During the briefing that happened amidst anti-government protests, Dr Mutua said democracy, as manifested through free and fair elections, is one of the key pillars of peace in the country.
He said the government is open to listening to the people and other partners, and urged members of the diplomatic corps to abide by international precedents when commenting on issues in their country of accreditation.
“We welcome constructive dialogue and engagement but also ask for respect for our political independence and adherence to international norms governing diplomatic relations,” Dr Mutua said.

While commenting on a recent statement from the Office of the United Nations Human Rights (OHCHR) in Geneva, Dr Mutua said the statement was based on propaganda.
“Our appeal to you is that we must remain truthful to ourselves even as you make your comments on the status of our country. Do not fall prey to propaganda,” he said.
The Cabinet Secretary said claims by OHCHR that 23 people died during recent demonstrations are not only inaccurate but misleading.
Dr Mutua said the ongoing demonstrations led by the Azimio la Umoja – One Kenya Coalition are a result of last year’s General Election which was won by President William Ruto.
“There are those who have refused to accept political defeat and have now turned to what amounts to economic sabotage in the name of street protests,” he said.

He said solution to the issues that have raised concern across the country will never come from violent protests, but through imaginative solutions.
The CS also said the government is committed to upholding the rule of law, protecting human rights, and maintaining peace and security in the country.
On the country’s battered economy, Dr Mutua said the Kenya Kwanza administration inherited many challenges from the previous regime, which are being addressed by the President.
“The President will not be distracted but will stay the path of moving Kenya forward. His only desire is to move millions of Kenyans from the bottom of the economic pyramid to a place where they can afford to feed their families.”
