Martha Karua warns Kindiki on ’empty’ maandamano threats
By Mercy SimiyuMartha Karua has warned Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki to keep off issuing consistent threats to the Azimio coalition.
In her address at a symposium dubbed Wanjiku tax pain in Nairobi on June 11, 2023, Karua, who contested as Raila Odinga’s running mate in the 2022 presidential election, wondered why Kindiki has formed a habit to consistently advise the opposition on what is right and wrong.
Karua further reminded Kindiki his warnings and threats do not hold water as the country is governed by the rule of law.
“The CS for interior is not our legal advisor. We are capable of reading the constitution and interpreting it to ourselves, and our rights will not be held back by shrill threats,” warned Karua.
Karua further stressed that the rights of the Azimio party and its members will not be compromised by the threats from individuals persons she referred to as people within positions of authority.
Ms Karua was responding to comments made by the Interior CS during a church service in Tharaka Nithi,
Mr Kindiki asked MPs to discuss their opposing views about the Finance bill in Parliament and desist from demonstrations, which he said could lead to the loss of lives and properties.
“We will not allow any individual claiming to be aggrieved with certain policies in the country to disrupt the businesses of others, threatening the lives of others through Maandamano. I am aware the MPs have an impending Finance bill on their plate, and I urge the MPs to take that discussion in Parliament. For those that will not be contented with the outcome of the voting in Parliament, there are other avenues (court) where you could submit your case,” Kindiki said.
Azimio leaders Raila Odinga and Kalonzo Musyoka recently announced they will lead protests over what they say is the increase in cost of living.
If it does happen, it will be the second time in six months the opposition has threatened to demonstrate against President William Ruto’s government.
