Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza speaks after surviving impeachment
By Sammy WaweruA day after Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza survived an impeachment by the Senate Assembly, she shared a message on social media detailing her past commitments to combat poverty in the county.
In a Facebook post that depicts a reenergized leader, the county boss also thanked God for saving her from impeachment.
The county boss further uploaded photos of her past activities in which she has empowered the less privileged in her county.
In the photos, she is seen carrying a bed and a mattress and also delivering iron sheets to a local staying in a shanty house.
The post on her official Facebook page includes a photo of a pickup truck transporting a cow.
“For those asking about the God of Kawira, this is how we worship Him, the Almighty Jehovah God,” the post reads.
“Operation Okolea Kaana Ka Miiru, (loosely translated as ‘Operation Rescue the community child in Meru), we do not glorify poverty; we uplift lives. Glory to God.”
These social remarks came a day after she narrowly escaped an ouster by the Senate Assembly following a motion by the majority of Members of Meru County Assembly (MCAs) who impeached her in October 2023.
The county legislators accused her of misusing office and public resources, nepotism, and arrogance.
Governor Mwangaza faced seven charges that were tabled before the Senate Assembly plenary, including misappropriation and misuse of public resources, nepotism and unethical practices, bullying, vilification, and demeaning of other leaders.
Other charges included illegal appointment and usurpation of statutory powers, contempt of court, illegally naming a road after her husband, and contempt of the assembly.
However, according to the majority of senators who voted in favor of the Governor, the accusations were not substantiated.
This was the second attempt to remove Ms Kawira from office by way of impeachment.
