Mike Sonko has voiced his opinion on the calls to potentially extend President William Ruto’s term of office.

The call was made by Fafi Mp Salah Yakub. The lawmaker claimed President Ruto, who has so far served 60 days in office, had done a ‘good job’ so far, and deserves a chance to extend his potential decade-long term.

Yakub has proposed the constitution be amended so as to allow a President to be able to contest until he is aged 75. Currently, the constitution limits the President’s tenure to ten-five year terms.

But Sonko, who formerly served as Nairobi governor, is against the idea, which he says could turn President Ruto to a political dynasty.

Yakub’s sentiments have divided opinion among his political colleagues, with ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) chairman Johnson Muthama distancing the party from his opinion.

Nandi Senator, Samson Cheragei, a close ally to President Ruto, says  he will support the motion if it makes its way to the Senate.
