Moses Kuria turns on Senators over Kawira Mwangaza’s impeachment trial
By Kevin CheruiyotPublic Service Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria appears to have landed in trouble with several Senators over his social media comments on the ongoing impeachment hearing of Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza.
The Senators, led by Aaron Cheruiyot, on November 8, 2023, took time off Mwangaza’s impeachment trial to discuss Kuria’s conduct.
Cheruiyot, who doubles up as Senate Majority leader, called for Kuria’s removal, claiming he has consistently embarrassed the government since he was appointed to the Cabinet.
“Mr Speaker, I now agree with members of this house who brought a censure motion before to discuss the conduct of this particular minister because, at every given opportunity, he has done nothing other than embarrass the appointing authority,” Senator Cheruiyot said.
“It is my submission Mr Speaker that the earlier CS Moses Kuria is let off his duty the better for this administration because every single day in every action he undertakes, he continues to embarrass the President and the people.”
The Senator further argued the electorate in Kiambu County was right not to vote for Kuria as their Governor.
Kuria lost to Kimani wa Matangi in the August 2022 election contest.
Cheruiyot maintained that the Senators will not be intimidated by Kuria.
The war of words started after Kuria, who was recently moved from the Trade ministry following a reshuffle by President William Ruto, listed 13 Senators whom he accused of misleading the Senate over Governor Mwangaza’s impeachment.
Those that Kuria listed include Cheruiyot, Jackson Mandago (Uasin Gishu), Hillary Sigei (Bomet), Embu Senator Munyi Alexander Mundigi, Samson Cherargei (Nandi), Seki Lenku (Kajiado), Fatuma Dullo (Isiolo), Abdul Haji (Garissa), Kamau Murango (Kirinyaga), Wahome Wamatinga (Nyeri), Kathuri Murungi (Meru), Enoch Wambua (Kitui), and Moses Kajwan’g of Homabay County.
Senator Kajwang’ accused Kuria of belittling the Senate.
“Senator Cheruiyot, because you’ve the ears of the President who is the appointing authority, let us not just complain in this house, go and tell the boss that this guy is an embarrassment not just to the government but to the Republic of Kenya, is an embarrassment to the entire East Africa, the deals he has done has done has made Kenya look like a pariah…this man must go,” Kajwang said.
