Mwingi Central MP Joe Mutambu was on Monday charged with assaulting preacher Thomas Wahome of the Helicopter of Christ Church.

Mr Mutambu appeared before Kibera principal magistrate Benard Ochoi and denied the charge of allegedly assaulting the city preacher and causing him bodily harm.

He was freed on a Sh50, 000 surety bond or an alternative cash bail of Sh20, 000. He promptly paid the cash bail.

The charge sheet stated that the incident happened on September 21 at the MP’s office located along Muchai drive in Kilimani area.

The court heard that Mr Mutambu intentionally attacked preacher Wahome who was at the time accompanied by policemen from Kilimani police station.

The MP denied committing the offence and was ordered to report to Kilimani police station for his finger prints to be taken.

Prosecutor Jackie Amollo told the court that the legislator’s finger prints had not not taken prior to his appearance in court.

“We ask the court to order that he presents himself to the investigating officer so that he can take his finger prints,” the prosecutor said.

Mr Mutambu promised to comply with the order.

According to prosecution’s documents, the preacher claims that he had gone to the lawmaker’s office to reclaim a lorry that he had leased to him.

“On reaching there in the company of two police men, the MP attacked me. I sustained injuries and sought treatment. Later I was issued with a P3 form,” preachers Wahome said in his statement to the police.

The case will be heard on January 14 next year with a mention scheduled October 15 this year.
