Normal traffic resumes on Nairobi Expressway after morning accident
By Hilary KimuyuNormal operations have resumed on the Nairobi Expressway following an accident on February 26, 2023, at the Southern Bypass.
In a statement, Moja Expressway said the accident occurred on K13 and involved four cars but has since been cleared.
“We wish to inform you that a recent accident on K13 on the Nairobi Expressway (Southern Bypass) has been cleared by the police and Road Asset and Corridor Management (RACM). Normal traffic has resumed,” the statement read.
Motorists using the expressway found themselves stuck as the accident brought heavy traffic.
Moja Expressway runs the Chinese-built road that stretches from the western side of the city to the southeastern edge of the metropolis and reportedly records an average daily traffic volume of 80,000 vehicles.
The road has 11 tolling stations, 54 toll plazas, and 54 cameras, with 126 cameras inside the toll plazas.
The road is monitored with recordings being done at 30-minute intervals.
There’s a smart monitoring system that detects congestion, spillage, vehicle reversals, pedestrian crossing and emergencies.
Earlier this year, motorists were hit by new charges which has seen them pay almost double from the usual pay.
According to a Gazette Notice dated December 19, 2023, and signed by Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen motorists using the Nairobi Expressway will have to pay higher toll rates.
The new tolls apply to different sections of the expressway and are designed to streamline the toll collection process and support infrastructure development and maintenance.
The Sh87 billion, 27.1-kilometer road was financed and built by the China Road and Bridge Corporation under a public-private partnership model.
The expressway, with 18.2km on the ground and 8.9km elevated, is a class A, four-lane dual carriageway with a design speed of 80km per hour.
