Plans are underway by the National Police Service (NPS) to scrap the positions of Officers Commanding Stations (OCSs) and replacing them with Ward Police Commanders.

Inspector General Hilary Mutyambai has said that those who will be appointed to the newly-created positions will be drawn from the Kenya Police Service, the Administrative Police Service and sleuths from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

TRAINING

This is different from what was the norm in the past where OCS officers were only picked from the Kenya Police Service.

Two weeks ago, OCS officers attended a training that prepared them for their roles and what is expected of them as Ward Police Commanders.

This means that there will be a total of 1,450 Ward Police Commanders who will be in-charge of officers in various wards.

SCRAPPED

Last month, the National Police Service scrapped the position of Officer Commanding Police Division (OCPD) and appointed Sub-County Police Commanders (SCPCs) as part of the changes aimed at aligning the police geographic and operational boundaries with the current administrative boundaries.

This means that Kenya will have a total of 322 SCPCs compared to the 597 OCPDs and Nairobi will have 11 SCPCs, down from the 14 OCPDs.
