A police officer died on the night of Sunday June 9, after he was knocked down by a police land cruiser in Sirisia Bungoma West Sub-County.

Police say the officer, identified as Fredrick Juma, who is attached to the Critical Infrastructure Police Unit (CIPU), was on duty along Chwele-Sirisia road when the incident occurred.

“He was on duty with other officers and had stopped a motor vehicle with registration number KCD 737C/ZD 8663 Mercedes Axor for normal checks when the accident happened,” a report seen by Nairobi News said.

The officers who stopped the Mercedes Benz being driven by Mr Ali Abdullahi Bunyori were on official duty along the highway when the accident that claimed Juma’s life occurred.

Police said Mr Ali and the deceased were having a conversation when he was knocked down by another motor vehicle travelling in the opposite direction.

“He was knocked down by a motor vehicle with registration number GKB 139T Toyota Land Cruiser attached to Sirisia Police Station which was coming from the opposite direction,” the police statement added.

The driver of the Land Cruiser was identified as Mr Gedion Magut.

Police said the collision pushed the deceased forward before he fell, sustaining severe head injuries that led to his death on the spot.

“The body of the deceased was taken to the Life Care Hospital morgue for autopsy. The police vehicle scratched the stationary trailer on the right rear side,” the report added.

Both vehicles, the Mercedes Benz and the police Land Cruiser, are currently being held at Chwele Police Station pending investigation.

The scene has been processed by traffic officers and the Bungoma Central Base Commander who is now handling the entire matter.
