Peter Kenneth to seek Nairobi’s governor seat as an independent
By SAMWEL OWINOFormer Gatanga MP Peter Kenneth has announced that he will seek the Nairobi gubenatatorial seat as an independent candidate in the August elections.
Mr Kenneth explained on Friday that his candidature as an independent is prompted by what he believes was a “sham Jubilee Party nominations full of irregularities” that saw him lose to his rival Senator Mike Sonko.
Speaking at media briefing held at his campaign’s headquarters, Mr Kenneth said he will unveil his running mate next week.
Mr Kenneth said he was setting out to reclaim the city from lack of leadership and poor management.
He dismissed the candidature of Mike Sonko for the Nairobi top seat, saying the senator has no managerial experience to run the capital city.
FIGURE HEAD GOVERNOR
“You can’t say you will do the politics while another person will be the manager. Nairobi cannot survive with a figure head governor,” said Mr Kenneth.
“The constitution says that it’s the governor who is the CEO of a county and not the deputy. Deputy governor is only assigned by the governor and therefore Nairobians cannot be told that the governor will do politics while its the deputy who will manage the city,” he said, in refernce to selection of Polycarp Igathe as Mr Sonko’s running mate.
He also moved to dispel concerns that his candidature will split the Jubilee – allied vote and give incumbent Governor Evans Kidero a clear win in August.
Mr Kenneth said he is capable of getting votes across the political divide.
The former presidential candidate also gave out key successes he intends to achieve as governor. These include:
- Fighting cartels within city hall.
- Clear all garbage in Nairobi within three months
- Build underpasses and overpasses within 18 months to clear traffic jams
- Devolve all functions such as health and garbage collection to constituencies for effective delivery of services.
