Private jets galore at JKIA as Buhari visits Kenya

The Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) could be inundated with private jets as Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari leads a high-powered delegation for a three-day state visit to Kenya on Wednesday.

A dispatch from State House spokesman Manoah Esipisu said President Buhari will arrive at the Eldoret International Airport where he will be received by his host, President Uhuru Kenyatta.

“President Buhari will receive a full State reception including a 21-gun salute,” said Mr Esipisu.

GALLANT SOLDIERS

Thereafter, the two presidents will proceed to the 9th Kenya Rifles, Moi Barracks, Eldoret where they will be joined by Somalia’s President for a special inter-denominational service to celebrate the lives of our gallant soldiers fallen in Somalia.

“On Thursday, President Kenyatta and President Buhari will hold private talks, before a bilateral meeting at State House, Nairobi,” he added.

In September 2013, former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan visited Kenya with 50 wealthy businessmen including Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote. There were an estimated seven private jets at JKIA.

PRIVATE JETS

Nigeria has the highest number of individuals with private jets in Africa, majority who are pastors.

The BBC reports that Nigeria’s rich elite are increasingly buying private jets to avoid flying on commercial airlines.

In October 2013, the Nigerian Airspace Management Authority introduced a luxury tax of about Sh300,000 ($3,000) for every departure of a private jet.

The jet owners responded by saying it was unfair and the Senate soon after ordered for a suspension of the levy – a sign of the political influence of Nigeria’s wealthy businessmen and women.
