Raila Odinga: Why I’ll not attend William Ruto’s inauguration
By Wangu KanuriAzimio presidential candidate Raila Odinga says he will not attend President-elect William Ruto’s inauguration.
In a statement released on Monday evening, Mr. Odinga announced he is outside the country and will also not be available adding he had serious concerns
The event is set for the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani on Tuesday.
“First, I believe that the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), the body in charge of our elections did not conduct a free and fair election,” said Odinga.
The seasoned politician who finished second behind Ruto in the August 9, 2022 polls, further explained he does not believe the Supreme Court rendered a fair judgment in upholding Ruto’s election victory.
“Secondly, I believe the Supreme Court ruling was not based on the facts and the law even though we accepted it.”
Odinga has also promised to announce the next step to his supporters once he is back in the country.
“We can only do so if we reform and transform the key institutions that are charged with practicing and advancing our democracy.”
East African presidents as well as other Heads of State from across Africa plus dignitaries are expected to witness the handing over of power.
On Monday, outgoing President Uhuru Kenyatta had a meeting with Ruto and for the first time congratulated his successor and wished him well in the task of leading Kenya.
