Riggy G: LGBTQ is satanic, has no space in Kenya
By Kevin CheruiyotDeputy President Rigathi Gachagua has finally contributed to the trending debate regarding the Supreme Court’s ruling on gays and lesbians.
The DP says it took him a long time to break his silence due to the surprise the apex court’s ruling had on him.
Speaking at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) on March 2, 2023, at the re-launch of the Women Enterprise Fund, the DP faulted the court for giving LGBTQ green light in forming an association in the country.
President William Ruto was among those in attendance.
The DP said the ruling might erode the African set-up of the family and the cultural manner of doing things.
“When a man marries another man, what will they be telling each other? What do they plan?” he posed.
He said the government has no issues with the apex court following the decision of the majority in the court.
“Hiyo maneno hatutaki, hiyo ni mambo ya kishetani (we don’t want those things, its satanic),” DP said.
The DP added that Kenya, led by President William Ruto and First Lady mama Rachel, is a God-fearing country.
“He (President Ruto) is a man of faith. He will do what needs to be done. In any case, we have our customs and traditions and what they are suggesting is repugnant to morality and justice and a way of life.”
The court ruled that the refusal by the NGOs Co-ordination Board to register the lobby group would violate human rights based on sexual orientation.
However, the court said that the country’s law – Section 162 of the Penal Code -that prohibits “unnatural offences” (defined as having carnal knowledge with any man, woman or animal against the order of nature) is binding.
Several religious leaders in the country including Muslim leaders have condemned the ruling.
Descending Judges Mohammed Ibrahim and William Ouko upheld the decision of the board, which said that it could not have allowed registration of an organization to champion actions that are against the law or expressly banned by the law.
