Sakaja to delay Uhuru Park nightclub projects after meeting LSK
By Kevin CheruiyotThe Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has confirmed that its representatives held a meeting with Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja over comments to establish a nightclub in Uhuru Park.
Speaking to Nairobi News, LSK president Faith Odhiambo said that during the meeting, the governor promised to delay his projects and allow residents to give their views on the proposal.
“He promised not to make any changes until there is proper public participation, including the Law Society of Kenya,” Ms Odhiambo said.
She said they would raise their concerns during the public participation exercise, where their demands for the state of greenery in the parks to be maintained would be raised.
“By virtue of the same, we have assumed that he has goodwill and he will not engage or purport to engage in any establishment before there is proper engagement of all stakeholders and we have made our positions clear on the same.”
Together with the Greenbelt government and Dr Owiso Owiso Advocate, the LSK had asked the governor to withdraw his statement suggesting that the tender would be issued inviting interested bidders to submit their proposals for the nightclubs and restaurants in the park.
“I hereby demand that you immediately withdraw the statements and confirm in a letter signed and sealed with the county seal that Uhuru Park and all open green spaces such as parks maintained by the county will not be commercialised,” he said.
The governor had hinted that the nightclub in the park would give residents a chance to relax in the renovated park and provide an ambience for visitors.
“There will be a nightclub here. We agreed hiyo kupiga kelele kwa estate muache (Stop making noise in the estate). You can come here and shout till the cows come home. This is the zone, sherehe mfanyie hapo (to party freely),” said Sakaja.
