By HILARY KIMUYUPolice officers at a Mandera police station were left puzzled after 14 heavily armed Administration Police officers stormed in and rescued one of their own who had been arrested and was locked in the cells.
The AP officers attached to the Rapid Deployment Unit (RDU) in Mandera, Kapendo camp, stormed the police station on foot while armed in full combat gear.
They fired shots in the air as one of them demanded for the cell’s key at gunpoint.
They went ahead to open the male cell and took one prisoner, identified as Corporal Richard Githaka Karanja, who had been arrested for the offence of robbery with violence.
The suspect was set to be arraigned in court on Friday morning to plea to the charges.
Inside the police cell, there were twelve prisoners in custody but none escaped during the raid.
The RDU officers fired four rounds in the air after they had rescued their colleague and departed towards their Kapendo camp which is about five kilometres from the police station.
While leaving, they said that they cannot allow the General duty officers to detain their colleague.
No casualties were reported during the incident.
Those present during the incident included the OCS, two station guards, the in -charge lines, the report office, the cell’s sentry personnel and the signaler.
The station later resumed it’s normal operation.
