SNAPPY 7: Elani’s Wambui – I once peed on myself!

Wambui Ngugi of the Afro pop band Elani

Wambui Ngugi, a member of the Afro pop band Elani, has a lot of followers not because she is gorgeous but because her beautiful vocals leaves a lot of people mesmerized.

Wambui sat down with Nairobi News and revealed what makes her a whole woman.

1. Describe who Wambui is – Born twenty something years ago, no need to know more. A Kenyan girl who is a singer and a song writer and in a band called Elani.

I thank God for giving me this gift to be able to touch people in a positive way and hope to get more chances to be able to do that.

I’m a city girl, born and raised in the city. I come from a small family of two girls and I’m the youngest. I was raised by fantastic parents and they have done so much for me and I’m forever grateful. My sister is an over achiever and I’m constantly trying to emulate her.

2. Why singing and not what you studied – For me it was a beautiful mistake. I never thought I was a singer until one day my over achieving sister challenged me when I was around six years old to a singing competition which I won. For me that was that but I have always loved music and I’ve always thought musicians are very cool.

I dint know I had it in me, not until I met Maureen and Bryan after a friend invited me to a place where people were singing and challenged me to sing and the rest is history.

I have a BSc in Actuarial Science from University of Nairobi. Have I used my degree? Yes, but in unconventional way. I gained what I gained in school and I’m grateful and it shaped my life to be who I am now.

3. Can you cook and what is your favorite cuisine – I haven’t done it in a while but I’m getting back to it now. I’m enjoying doing it and getting to spend time on my own and just to be an individual.

What I’m proud of is that I have maintained eating good and not that rubbish like the way I used to back in the day.

I’m still eating right but I am failing because I have a sweet tooth. I would kill for some pastry right now which have jam and chocolate; things like croissant which when you bite they just ooze chocolate. Not forgetting cold stone ice-creams.

4. Your most embarrassing moment and do you ever get cat calls – It was a nice fantastic day in my last year in high school and we were waiting to be picked up. There was a wheelbarrow around and my friend suggested that we play this game that two people get in it and be pushed around. So I got in with one of my friends but there was one point that was a little raised up so when you reach that point the people in the wheelbarrow had to like jack up because of the impact.

After the first few rounds I decided it was my turn, so we got in and our friend started pushing it, just before we reached the impact point I changed my mind but it was a little too late. Before I knew it we hit the little hill and within seconds I had peed on myself and don’t forget I was a Form Four student at the time.

Yes, I do get cat calls, and if it’s on a good day I will turn around and wave at you but if it’s on a bad day I will give you a side eye that will scare you.

5. Are you dating? Do you see yourself as a mother in the future – I’m in a very serious relationship with my savior Jesus Christ my Lord and saviour. Let me try and expound more on why we say that. I signed up for this Elani business to be in the public and be asked personal questions, but the person I’m seeing hasn’t signed up for that, so its not fair for me to bring them into it.

I truly believe being a mother is one thing that God made me for because I truly do love children and I can’t wait to see how I will yell at them. I think I will be a mother who yells.

6. Any hobbies and do you go out a lot – If I was younger I would have said swimming and some other sports, but honestly speaking my only other hobby at the moment is just simple I’m enjoying life.

I like to have fun, but rather than going to a club, I prefer having people I know to just hang out together in one area and do our silly things.

7. Any advice to anyone who wants to emulate you – What’s most important in life is to understand why you were put here. The moment you are able to understand your purpose in life, you should always remember that purpose is for we and not for I.

So if you are doing something and you are the only one gaining then its highly likely that its not your purpose, it is just something that you are good at.

The moment that you find something that you do and do so well, that not only helps and impacts you and also impacts others then you should stick to it.

It means that is why you were born and put here. That is why you are constantly being given the gift of life because there is something that you need to achieve that is greater than yourself so as to impact others.

The faster you find that, the faster you will transition yourself.
