Striker Kiongera defends poor form in Tanzania
By DAVID KWALIMWAKenyan striker Mungai Kiongera says he expects to be firing in the goals in Tanzania’s Vodacom league in the next “couple of matches”.
In what is a well documented “curse” of Kenyan footballers plying their trade in Tnbzania, the striker has had to endure criticism from sections of the Tanzania media following a patch of below par performances in recent weeks.
The former KCB is yet to score a goal for Simba SC in seven appearances since rejoining the club in December, despite scoring freely for KCB in the second half of the 2015 SportPesa Premier League season.
In his defence, the Harambee Stars forward told Mwanaspoti: “I expect to start scoring soon. The issue here is I went on holiday soon after the KPL season ended last November. So at the moment it is like pre-season for me, in contrast most of the players here are at peak because the Tanzania league season is past its halfway mark,”.
Kiongera’s immediate task is to impress upon recently appointed stand-in coach Ugandan Jackson Mayanja at the Msimbazi street based side in DaresSalaam.
Simba are having a poor season by their very own high standards. The club is currently placed fourth in the league, behind arch rivals Azam, Yanga and Mtibwa Sugar.
