Two Ians light up city’s academy

At that precise moment, the result of his hard work was making one boy remain speechless.

Timothy Ian Kindiu Masila (right) who was ranked fifth nationally, with 440 marks, was lost for words but joined in song and dance to celebrate his success at the Newlight Academy in Komarock, Nairobi.

Parents and pupils broke into song and dance at the academy’s compound as teachers and other staff joined in jubilation.

The school was ranked the third best private school nationally in the 2013 KCPE examinations, whose results were released on Tuesday.

His former classmate, Ian Kamau Irungu, came second after scoring 438 marks. He was the eighth best male candidate nationally.

His dream school and career?

“I would want to join Alliance High School and later pursue Civil Engineering at the university level,” Timothy said in an interview at their home on Tuesday.

The seemingly shy boy said he would like to use his engineering interest and thereafter skills in the design and construction of dams and bridges.

Though they expected their first-born son to perform well, Timothy’s parents were “pleasantly surprised”.

Mr Creopus Masila described his son as a very hard-working person who put a lot of effort in his education.

Among the top 10

“He has always been among the top 10 pupils since Standard One but being one of the country’s top performers was a pleasant surprise,” Mr Masila, a businessman, said.

Timothy thanked his teachers for supporting him throughout his time at the school.

The performance of his former school was the result of joint efforts of teachers, parents and pupils, he said.
