The University of Nairobi administration on Tuesday broke its silence over the weekend killing of its two students by mob justice.

The two, Julius Omondi and Mohammed Yusuf, were killed by fellow students after they were found in possession of a stolen laptop.

Vice-Chancellor Prof Peter Mbithi, in a statement, said the University’s security personnel had intervened and were hurt by students as they rescued the victims and rushed them to the clinic.

“One of the suspects passed on while at the University Health Services, the other one was rushed to MP Shah Hospital where he was admitted but passed on thereafter,” Prof Mbithi said.

The deceased students are said to have been part of a gang of five that had accosted a student and snatched his laptop bag.

The student raised alarm and fellow students came out of their rooms and pursued the gang towards State House road.

“The students caught up with the group along State House Road next to YMCA and started beating them up. While three of the suspects managed to escape, the other two were caught and were frog-marched towards Hall 2,” read the statement from the Vice Chancellor.

The University’s administration has notified families of the deceased and said it will update them on the progress of investigations.

The statement makes no mention of whether the students involved in the mob-justice had been arrested.
