Why Grand Mullah is suddenly singing praises for CJ Martha Koome
By Kevin CheruiyotConstitutional lawyer Ahmednasir Abdullahi has been a vocal critic of Chief Justice Martha Koome since she came to office in 2021.
Ahmednasir, who is also a senior counsel, has been critical about almost every decision made by the courts during Ms Koome’s tenure.
However, Ahmednasir now appears to be warming up to the CJ whom she praised on social media on Wednesday.
According to the lawyer, his sudden change of tone was prompted by the recent gazetting of a High Court sub-registry at the Mandera Law Courts, the first of its kind since independence.

“Yesterday’s ceremony is an epoch defining moment and I, for one, must congratulate the judiciary and Madam CJ Koome for this history making moment…I’m very happy that CJ Koome and the Kenyan judiciary have finally conquered the last frontier of injustice and lack of access to justice in NFD in opening a high court in Mandera,” Ahmednasir said.
The seasoned lawyer said the move is historic and will change the lives of the people of the Northern Frontier District (NFD) after a long and torturous history of human rights violations and emergency rule.
He said the CJ and the judiciary should be commended for storming the last fortresses that had stood in the way of those seeking justice for 60 years.

“This historic milestone should have captured the historic significance of this landmark event and celebrate it not as a news item but as a historic momentous event,” Ahmednasir said.
During the event in Mandera, CJ Koome said the Judiciary is keen on actualising the dream of having courts closer to the people of Mandera.
“As a first step to actualise this goal, I officially designated and gazetted a High Court Sub-Registry at Mandera Law Courts on the 7th August of this year,” Koome said.
The CJ added that the Judiciary will continue to work closely with County Governments particularly in the area of securing land and developing physical infrastructure to house courts in constituencies that do not have court stations.
