Why Sauti Sol snubbed Andrew Kibe in the US
By Elizabeth NgigiIn a recent video that has gone viral on social media, former radio presenter Andrew Kibe explains how boy Band Sauti Sol refused to meet him while in the US.
Kibe explained that he had contacted the group’s manager with the intention of meeting them, only to be informed that the boys did not want to meet him.
Reminiscing about the incident, Kibe shared:
“I told the promoter that I was in town and I wanted to meet Sauti Sol. The manager said they were not interested, that they did not want to meet me now or ever. I was like, what is going on in here? They are not interested. I had a humbling moment. Sometimes you might think you are a big deal, but you are not. I thought I was a big deal, but I was not.”
Sauti Sol, known for their musical prowess and successful career, have established themselves as one of the most sought-after music acts in Kenya.
The group’s high standards and selective approach to collaborations and engagements have become apparent over time.
Previously, Sauti Sol disclosed that they do not perform during national events, citing their high rates as one of the primary reasons for this decision.
In an interview with Nairobi News, the band members explained that the government cannot afford to meet their performance fees for public holiday celebrations.
Bien, one of the members of Sauti Sol, stated:
“We will never perform in any public holiday celebration because the government cannot afford to pay us. It is the bitter truth.”
The last time the group performed at such an event was in 2011, receiving a payment of only Sh40,000, which they distributed among themselves.
Sauti Sol has also been vocal about their dissatisfaction with the Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK) for what they perceive as a lack of appreciation for Kenyan musicians.
In a tweet posted on April 18, the group threatened to withdraw their membership from the organization, stating:
“We are going to withdraw our membership from the society as it does not serve our best interests entirely.”
The band is planning a show together, dubbed, Solfest before they take another break of working separately.
