Woman in court for theft of Sh1.7 million from her drinking buddy
By Joseph NdundaA 26-year-old woman in Nairobi has been charged with colluding with accomplices to steal ($12,400) Sh 1.7 million from their drinking buddy at a club in Komarock estate.
Ms Claire Achieng Otieno is facing theft charges contrary to section 268 (1) of the penal code as read with section 275 of the criminal procedure code.
The accused allegedly stole the cash from Mr Paul Oloo Inda on May 6, 2023.
Mr Inda had arrived in the country from a West African country the previous day and picked at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport by a friend who took him to Komarock. His luggage included the cash he had been sent with by friends in the foreign country to deliver to their families.

The next day in midmorning, he left the house while carrying the cash in a bag and headed to a nearby shopping centre to change the cash to Kenyan currency but found the rates were very low.
Mr Inda then went to a bar in Komarock to drink with friends before they proceeded to another club within the same estate. At the new club, they were joined by three women including Ms Otieno. Later, Mr Inda noticed that his bag containing the money which he had kept under the table was missing.

He reported the matter to the police who reviewed the CCTV footage at the bar which had captured the women stealing the money then taking off.
Of the three women, only Ms Otieno was traced and arrested. The CCTV footage has since been sent to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) for analysis by the cybercrime detectives.
Ms Otieno denied the charges before Senior Principal Magistrate Agnes Mwangi of Makadara Law Courts. She was released on a bond of Sh600,000 with a surety of a similar amount. The case will be mentioned on July 27, 2023 before hearing starts on November 2, 2023.
