Another high profile death: Son of police boss shoots himself, using dad’s firearm

A 13-year-old son of the North Eastern Deputy police boss Sunday, October 2, 2022, died by suicide at their home in the Chereni area off Kang’undo Road.

In a police report seen by Nairobi News, Mr Patrick King’ori Macharia who is the Commissioner of Police and the current Regional Police Commander in the North Eastern Region informed police via phone that his son had used his firearm to take his own life.

He said that he was preparing to go back to work after spending the weekend with his family and had placed his Jericho pistol on the couch in the living room.

Mr Macharia then went to the bathroom and when he went back to the living room where he had placed his firearm he found it missing.

“He asked his wife Ms Judy Watetu Muchiri about it, but she said she had not picked it. They then made a decision to ask their last-born son who was in his bedroom. The son Samson Kariuki, 13 years old and a pupil at Elite Academy had locked his bedroom door from inside,” the police report read in part.

It further revealed that when they knocked he did not respond.

The police boss then immediately broke into the bedroom and found his son had shot himself in the head and lying on the bed.

The bullet exited from the right side of the face slightly below the right eye.

“The officer took the said gun from the scene fearing that his other son could use it because he was in shock. It is worthwhile to note that the victim was wearing woollen gloves on both hands,” the report further read.

The body was then removed and taken to Kenyatta University Hospital morgue as detectives attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) investigate the matter.
