Another Modern Coast bus in an accident, company releases statement

On December 30, 2022, the Modern Coast bus management released a statement detailing another accident that involved one of their long-distance vehicles.

“Today morning our bus destined for Kampala from Kigali KCU 054L was involved in an accident with a Volcano Bus near Rwahi village on the Kampala – Gatuna road,” the statement stated.

“Confirmed reports from Uganda Police Force and the eyewitnesses indicate reckless driving by the Volcano Bus driver who left his side and was driving from the right. Our driver tried to dodge the Volcano Bus in vain, thus the collision.”

Six people succumbed to injuries, including the Modern Coast driver, conductor and one passenger from the Modern Coast, and the other three were from the Volcano Bus.

“The rest of the passengers were rescued safely and rushed to hospital and are responding to treatment at Lotom Health Centre.

Please, disregard any speculative publications going around social media, for they are misrepresentations of the facts and misleading. The authors and facilitators are on a wild goose chase.”

The bus company’s management stated that investigations into the accidents are ongoing, and they “wish a quick recovery to those affected and undergoing treatment and condole with the families whose loved ones succumbed to injuries.”

This comes after another road accident involving a Modern Coast bus on December 29, 2012, that reportedly left one dead and several others nursing injuries.

This attracted mixed reactions from Kenyans on Twitter, who expressed concern about the bus company’s operation.

The bus was headed to Homa Bay from Mombasa when it crashed into a river in Kisii County.

The bus driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle and veered off the road at Masosa before plunging into the Nyakomisaro River.

Kisii Central OCPD Amos Ambasa confirmed the incident saying the dead person was a pedestrian who was hit by the bus before it lost control.

The bus was retrieved from the river and towed to Kisii Police Station.

The deceased’s body was taken to the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital morgue.

The company’s Twitter page said there was no passenger casualty.

“Today our bus from Mombasa to Homa Bay in Kisii was reversing down a steep maram road to park down a slope when it hit a matatu. As a result, the driver panicked and the bus slid down and fell on its side into a ditch,” wrote the company on Twitter.

“All the 43 passengers on the bus alighted safely and some with minor injuries were taken for treatment whilst others are continuing their journey with a replaced bus. Contrary to reports circulating on social media, there were no passenger casualties.”
